Affordable Housing

  • Currently, the federal government (through the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation - CMHC)  supports capital funds (called REITS) in acquiring existing lower-rent properties so that they can find ways to maximize rent, notably through renovictions.

  •  Clare Hacksel, Jagmeet Singh and the NDP will:

  • Tighten rules on CMHC-insured loans to REITs and big investors to close loopholes to stop ‘renovictions’

  • Create a fund that supports non-profits in acquiring properties at risks of being lost to REITs and big investors

  • Build 500,000 homes in 10 years.

  • Increase federal transfers for rental supports to lower long wait lists for affordable housing to give families in housing need up to $5,000 per year to pay for rent, more for those with exceptional needs

  • Lift GST on building rental units that meet strict affordability standards
